DemandEngine Launches Study to Identify Adult Learner Communication Preferences

Ten institutions partner with DemandEngine to understand marketing preferences and online participation

(Savannah, GA – October 14, 2009) DemandEngine, an interactive enrollment marketing consulting and services company, announced a new study aimed to understand the communication preferences and online participation behavior of adult-learners. Ten institutions across the country are partnering in the research effort.

“With the interest in social technologies, colleges and universities are interested in participating,” said Tim Copeland, managing partner of DemandEngine. “The purpose of this study is to understand how adult-learners WANT to communicate with institutions at various points in their decision process, from initial awareness, to registration or application. We will also look at how this population participates in online activities ranging from posting social status updates and listening to podcasts, to using email.”

The survey audience will be made-up of adult-learners who have recently inquired, applied, or enrolled to a number of Professional and Continuing Education units across the country.

Research partners in the study include: Ball State University, Georgia Tech Distance Learning and Professional Education, High Point University Evening Degree Program, Louisiana State University Continuing Education, University of Minnesota College of Continuing Education, University of Missouri Extension, UNC Charlotte Continuing Education, University of Southern Indiana Extended Services, and the University of Washington Extension.

“By focusing on the online participation behavior of your students, colleges and universities can remove themselves from the Web 2.0 social technologies arms race,” Copeland continued. “Enrollment marketing strategies can then be focused on what your students actually do online and what they are ready for, versus bleeding edge approaches that may be safely ignored for the moment.”

The study results will be released in early 2010.
