Press Release
DemandEngine Names Tim Copeland As Managing Partner
(Savannah, GA – July 13, 2009) DemandEngine announced today that higher education veteran, Tim Copeland has joined the firm as managing partner. Copeland recently led the development of new strategic enrollment management consulting services at SunGard Higher Education.
“With the seismic shifts in how student’s access information and combined with budget reductions, colleges and universities must rethink their enrollment marketing efforts,” said Copeland. “DemandEngine has been a strong proponent of interactive enrollment marketing, an approach grounded in dialogue, not the traditional methods of interruption or intrusion. I am pleased to join the team.”
DemandEngine is an interactive enrollment marketing agency dedicated to the higher education industry. The firm provides planning and development services in the areas of interactive marketing strategy, search engine marketing, social strategy and touchpoint management. The agency also provides a best-in-class email marketing platform and services that support the development of sophisticated campaigns, behaviorial tracking, and reporting dashboards.
In his role as managing partner, Copeland will be responsible for overseeing the company’s operations, setting the strategic direction of the company, and he will continue to serve as an enrollment management and marketing thought leader for higher education.
“Interactive enrollment marketing is about engaging your prospective students, remembering what they do and say, and then connecting with them in ways that demonstrate you understand them, and help them achieve their goals,” said Copeland. “Despite the proliferation of communication technologies that enable closer relationships with students, many colleges and universities are deploying the same old enrollment marketing playbook of intrusion, rather than attention and dialogue. I call it the letter, letter, email approach, now applied to social technologies such as Facebook or Twitter, “ said Copeland.
“I find many institutions making big bets on software or haphazardly adopting social technologies with little idea of how these investments will move the enrollment performance needle. As an interactive enrollment marketing agency, DemandEngine is an enthusiastic advocate of technology, but within context. It’s still about connecting with students and driving enrollment results. The return-on-investment from the tools comes when linked to business objectives.”
Copeland’s experience is a unique blend of international corporate marketing experience, consulting, and higher education enrollment management.
At SunGard Higher Education, Copeland successfully created and deployed new enrollment and performance management strategic services to support the launch of Banner Enrollment Management software. In his role, he consulted with a variety of colleges and universities across the country, including Brown University, Emporia State University, Florida Keys Community College, and Washburn University.
As the former director of enrollment marketing for Georgia Tech’s Distance Learning and Professional Education unit, he transformed the marketing organization and grew enrollments and revenue for non credit certificate programs and conferencing business.
In his role of vice-president of marketing for Lectra North America, Copeland led go-to-market efforts for the company’s design software, textile machinery, and consulting services offering. In the early 2000’s, he embraced the use of interactive marketing channels such as email, paid search advertising, and webinars as part of the company’s marketing mix, the first in the soft goods industry to do so.
As director of undergraduate admissions at Mercer University, he increased net tuition revenue, reduced the discount rate, and increased enrollments in several key programs, including the university’s fledgling engineering program. As director of admissions at Reinhardt College, he introduced more sophisticated approaches to managing new student recruitment, leading to increased enrollments.
Copeland is a frequent speaker at higher education conferences and meetings on the topics of interactive marketing, constituent relationship management, and enrollment performance. He was recently published in the Journal of Continuing Higher Education and College & University and writes a blog on strategy, marketing and technology insight for higher education professionals at www.enrollmentmarketing.org.
